Show Reel Development

Completed the remaining tasks of the Development stage including;

  • Updated storyboard and shot lists
  • Updated CV
  • Created a covering letter template for the camera operator job role.
  • Further show reel research for comparison to my own in terms of how it holds up to a professional standard.  Probably need a fresh pair of eyes but as far as I can tell my reel is looking quite good in comparison.

Unless I’m told otherwise I think my development stage might be complete.  My lecturer is looking over it as I type this so hopefully the feed back is positive.  If it’s not, then hopefully it won’t be a major overhaul or I’ll be in W9 until the janitors kick me out.

…okay, so my lecturer thinks I’m sorted!

Show Reel Research

Very good pacing.  the action in the shots seems to be synced up well with the rhythm of the soundtrack.  Good variation of footage.  This show reel is advertised as a show reel but it seems to be a bit more general as there is the inclusion of editing techniques and motion graphics.  Contact details included but no copyright notice.

Excellent beginning with the sound design as the music builds.  The cuts and how the action in the close ups matches the soundtrack with the knobs on the helicopter control panel. The soundtrack is a popular song by a well known artist but I don’t see a copyright permissions.  I think at 6 minutes the reel is to long.  I think the footage is competent and quite exciting but I felt my interest waning around the 2 minute mark.

i wasn’t to impressed with the content of this show reel.  I thought the shots were good, the lighting especially.  I did, however, find the shot content was similar throughout until the end of the reel where the content gets a bit more exciting.  I like the song choice as it create a low key mood but I didn’t feel like it added much drama to what I was watching.

Meeting with Lecturer

13 May 2016

We spoke about the peer reviews and what I took from them in regards to improving my show reel.

Michael’s advice

Start the show reel with the pan of Matt in the nature reserve
Start the Rehearsal footage with the kick drum shot when the drums come in on ‘monomyth’.
The show reel starts stronger than it ends. At 1:52 the reel can be trimmed of the weaker shots.
In terms of pacing we discussed the light to dark theme and how that will dictate the pacing as well as the music. At first I was going to make the light to dark a linear progression throughout the shots. However, Michael complimented the rise in music with knockhill section. With my original plan for the theme these shots would come before this rise. So instead I’ve decided to go for an ABAB structure of light – dark – light – dark.
We also discussed the requirements of the evaluation stage. Primarily we discussed what the requirements for the presentation are. I need to bullet point all the important parts of my development through my online journals to track how the project progressed and changed throughout the year.

Peer Reviews

11 May

The Peer review went very well. A big improvement from the first rough cut I put together from the UWS show reel.  I got a very positive response from the class in terms of the content and composition of the shots.  The issues that did come up was slight problems with the pacing and how appropriate my song choice is for parts of the edit like the little horror section at the end.  Also, with the rough edit the light /dark theme of the reel didn’t come across very well with how I’ve sequenced the shots at the moment.  I agree with these criticisms and have found the peer review process very helpful.  I know now exactly where I need to take this project now by improving the following:

  • Shot sequencing
  • Music choice
  • Copyright notice and website link

Show Reel Rough Cut 2

I was going to show my previous show reel for the peer review but the more I watched it the more I thought I should throw a quick cut together with the new footage I’ve shot.  I’ve just concentrated purely on quality of the shots.  I still have to cut to the music or sequenced it to the light/dark theme, and I’ve not put a copyright notice on it.  With all of that in mind I think it is much better than the previous iteration and I already know how I’m going to implement the previously mentioned changes.  I feel like the reel is really starting to take shape now.
